However, a sudden trajectory change, announced five weeks before launch, altered the initially planned re-entry location in the Indian Ocean. This resulted in a steeper re-entry and ditching 2,000 kilometers off the coast of Brazil, making recovery impossible. Despite this, Atmos collected valuable data, notably on Phoenix’s inflatable heat shield, considering the mission a success.

Unforeseen challenges and adaptations

The change of trajectory imposed by SpaceX forced Atmos Space Cargo to review its logistical plans. Initially, the company had planned to recover the spacecraft near Reunion Island, with ships and aircraft mobilized to collect crucial data. However, the new trajectory moved the landing point off the coast of Brazil, making any recovery attempt impossible.

Faced with these challenges, Atmos had to adapt quickly, setting up new ground stations in South America to maintain communication with Phoenix.
